Finding Yoel and Initiating the Quest

To begin this questline, you must locate Yoel of Londor near the Foot of the High Wall bonfire in the Undead Settlement. Speaking with him allows you to accept his service, after which he relocates to Firelink Shrine as a resident merchant. Once settled at Firelink Shrine, interacting with him reveals the option to draw out your true strength.

Understanding Hollowing Requirements and Dark Sigils

Receiving free levels from Yoel is directly tied to your character's Hollowing level. Each time you accept a level, Yoel grants you a Dark Sigil item, which accumulates Hollowing upon death equal to the number of sigils held. The five free levels become available sequentially at Hollowing levels 0, 2, 6, 12, and 15. Dying between level requests allows you to hit these thresholds quickly and acquire all five levels.

Questline Consequences and Strategic Timing

Acquiring all five Dark Sigils causes Yoel to pass away, allowing Yuria of Londor to appear and continue the Usurpation of Fire storyline. However, if you enter the Catacombs of Carthus after defeating the Abyss Watchers before receiving all five levels, Yoel dies prematurely and Yuria will never spawn.
